In the 1930s when Japan moved to a war footing and started to fight wars, what was the situation of the primary schools in the fishing villages along Sanriku, Tohoku, Japan? Did teachers earnestly adopt patriotic education, including subservience to the Emperor’s wishes, and shut down their students’free thinking? How did children orphaned by tsunami develop their own disaster prevention from tsunami in their later lives? In this paper The Taro Village Tsunami Record Magazine and the local patriotism education documents of Taro Village are analyzed. While all over the country teachers' thinking was under pressure and many were arrested, a reading of these sources makes clear that there were teachers who paid attention to the problems of their local community and prepared materials to change lives by means of education
