Das Glasperlenspiel』とハウアーの《12音遊戯 Zwolftonspiel》との間には，当時の芸術上のトポスであった「結晶 Kristall」概念が通底しており，それは思想家ヴァルター・ベンヤミン（1892～1940）による表現主義の作家パウル・シェーアバルト（1863～1915）の評価とも重なっていた。ここでのポイントは，シェーアバルトが「ガラス建築」を倫理教育と結びつけたように，ヘッセもハウアーもその創作活動を通して，精神的「陶冶 Bildung」を常に意識し強調していたことである。そこでは，「結晶」概念は，「陶冶」が最終的に目標とする普遍的な原理（プラトン的イデア）の象徴とされていた。ハウアーの作品には，副題に「Haemonie, Melodie, Rhythmus in kristallinischer Bindung（oder
