First, high school students (N=683) completed questionnaires which measured the relationship between \"coping with stress\" and stress responses and cognitive appraisal. Next, a class, aimed at increasing students' confidence in coping with stress by enlarging their coping repertoire, was conducted for 47 high school students. The effectiveness of the worksheet and discussions offered in the class was then examined. This study also examined how the effectiveness differed depending on the type of coping strategies. Results showed that discussion was an effective method of instruction while the worksheet alone was ineffective. Problem-focused cognitive coping strategies were the only form of coping strategy that effectively instilled confidence. Discussing emotion-focused coping strategies was ineffective.
