I have attempted to sketch, in this short paper, an outline of the ethnic population and related population statistics in Britain, which actually means here Great Britain, and to briefly review previous studies uslng ethnic population statistics in Britain. The British population has been getting more and more diverse due to the large-scale immlgration from Third World countries, particularly the New Commonwealth countries such as Caribbean countries, India,\nPakistan, Bangladesh, and East African countries since the 1950'S. Those immlgration waves have formed the two main ethnic minority categories in Great Britain; theso-called Asians(the immigrants from the Indian subcontinent and their descendants) and theso-called West Indians, or more exactly Black-Caribbeans. Those minority people differ sharply from the native people in Britain by colour or race, language(with the exception of the Black-Caribbeans), religion, and culture. Those differences have caused a wide range of social and cultural problems in terms of interracial and interethnic relationship in this country.\nThe ethnic population statistics are indispensable for an understanding of this multi-racial and multi-ethnic society in Britain. However, the direct question about ethnic origin had not been introduced in to the national population census until 1991. In census data before the 1991 Census,\ntherefore, the birthplace or parental birthplace data of the population had been the only source for estimating the size of ethnic populations and comparing them over time. The estimate of the size of an ethnic group was usually made on a family head basis in order to include the second generation members. But for several reasons, there are still significant limitations on our ability to make precise estimates of the size of the ethnic minority population; namely the presence of second generation family heads who were born in Britain. White people of British ancestry who were born in the New Commonwealth countries, or whose parents were born there, and had immigrated back to Britain, and mixed marriage couples and their children. The major statistics other than censuses which have provided ethnic population data in Britain are the General Household Survey, the National Dwelling and Housing Survey, and the EEC Labour Force Survey. All these statistical sureys have been carried out on a sample basis, and they were also limited in their capacity to estimate the size of the ethnic\npopulation due to statistical error, and they are not appropriate for small area analysis due to the small sample.\nThe question about ethnic origin used in the 1991 Census comprises the seven previously coded categories; White, Black-Caribbean, Black-African, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, and Chinese, and two other categories for free self-description; Black-Other and Any other ethnic group. According to the responses to this question, 35 separate codes were classified in some of the most detailed tables, but for the usual tabulations the following ten ethnic group categories were used; White, Black-Caribbean, Black-African, Black-Other, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Chinese, OtherAsian, and Other. These main ten categories do not completely correspond to real ethnic groups in Britain, and the criteria for classification differ from category to category, namely the White is identified by colour, the Black groups by colour and regional origin, the South Asian groups by national origin, and Chinese by culture. However, it was noteworthy that the direct question about ethnic origin was introduced into the national census for the\nfirst time.\nHitherto, there have been quite a number of studies on ethnic minority groups in Britain using the above-mentioned population statistics. These studies can be roughly classified into the following main three categories. The first category is comprised of the studies on estimates of the size of\neach ethnic minority group and of the total ethnic minority population in the country as well as studies on the analysis of their demographic composition. The second category is comprised of a large volume of studies on ethnic minorities in Greater London, a true multi-ethnic metropolis. The third category is comprised of the studies on the patterns of ethnic residential segregation and the formation of ethnic quarters or coloured clusters in major conurbations in Britain. Those studies have been carried out from\nthe viewpoint of various disciplines including demography and geography. Of course, they have been of great help in understanding the ethnic diversity in Britain. However, I cannot help feeling that, compared to the United States of America, there still remain many problems for British ethnic studies to solve in terms of quantity of actual researches as well as\nquality of studies to provide wide-range perspectives of analysis. One important reason for this is undoubtedly that the direct data of ethnic groups were first introduced into the national census late in 1991, and there search results using this 1991 Census have not yet been fully published. I believe we can expect to see the rapid progress of the British ethnic studies in the near future.","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_41_full_name_3":{"attribute_name":"著者別名","attribute_value_mlt":[{"nameIdentifiers":[{}],"names":[{"name":"SUGIURA, Tadashi"}]}]},"item_41_publisher_14":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"岩手大学人文社会科学部"}]},"item_41_text_4":{"attribute_name":"著者(機関)","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_text_value":"岩手大学人文社会科学部"}]},"item_41_version_type_27":{"attribute_name":"著者版フラグ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_version_resource":"http://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85","subitem_version_type":"VoR"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"杉浦, 直"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2016-11-14"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"hcs-p421-443.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"738.6 kB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_note","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"hcs-p421-443.pdf","url":"https://iwate-u.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/12757/files/hcs-p421-443.pdf"},"version_id":"c1ca5505-61be-4942-b5f3-9f39c4f4584a"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"イギリスにおけるエスニック集団と人口統計","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"イギリスにおけるエスニック集団と人口統計"}]},"item_type_id":"41","owner":"3","path":["1673"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"公開日","attribute_value":"2010-03-15"},"publish_date":"2010-03-15","publish_status":"0","recid":"12757","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["イギリスにおけるエスニック集団と人口統計"],"weko_creator_id":"3","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-05-16T11:27:46.287945+00:00"}
