| 内容記述 | In this paper, we discuss some of the issues concerning the notion of inheritance. The term 'inheritance' generally refers to the phenomenon that derivationally related words occur in similar environments, as the following pair shows: (1)a. John criticized the play. b. John's criticism of the play This similarity can be captured on the assumption that derived words inherit the lexical property from their base words. This idea, then, raises the question as to what kind of lexical property it is that is inherited. We find two major approaches to this question in the literature. The first approach assumes that the subcategorizational requirement of the base is inherited in the derived, while the second approach assumes the argument structure of the base to be inherited. Next section surveys these two approaches. Section 3 introduces the theory of inheritance based on the second approach and the counter arguments against it. What we aim to do insection 3 is the confirmation of the second approach and the refutation of the first approach. |
