| 内容記述 | This article aims to clarify the interaction between lexical properties of deverbal compound adjectives, especially those derived from psychological verbs (henceforth, PVs), and their syntactic structures. To be more specific, we will tackle the puzzle of -ing forms derived from PVs (henceforth PV-ing, following Ono(1990)). First, notice the following contrast: (1)a. dying flowers, a groaning father, a running boy, a sleeping girl, a walking mother,... b. *an arranging man,*a killing boy, *making children, *persuading ideas, *a pushing truck... (Keyser and Roeper 1984) As has been observed since Lees(1960), there is a contrast in gramaticality between transitive and intransitive verbs when the-ing forms modify nouns. |
