が1950年代に紹介したのが最初といわれており、その後異文化間接触研究の中で重要な概念として使われてきた。しかし、その概念の普及に比してこの用語が体系的に整理されているとは言い難い。ここで取り上げる Furnham,A.f. & Bochner,S. の Culture Shock : Psychological reactions to unfamiliar environments (1986,Routledge) は、異文化間接触に関連する諸研究を「カルチャー・ショック」の観点から整理した包括的な書の一つといえる。本報告では本書の主要部分を要約・概説すると共に、現代の異文化間接触研究への示唆について考察する。その際、筆者が留学生の異文化適応を素材として整理してきた、異文化間接触における「緩衝機能(buffering function)」（細越,1996a,b,1997）と本書の「カルチャー・ショック」の視点との関連についても論及する。\n　本書の第一部では留学、移民、国際協力、国際ビジネス、観光などの異文化間接触を総括的に論じ、その形態を滞在期間、目的、異文化への関わり方等の諸次元で分類している。第二部ではこうした様々な人の精神的健康や心理学的特徴について諸説している。第三部は、本書の中心である「カルチャー・ショック」について論じており、そこでは不慣れな環境の中でどう対処するか、（つまり Furnham
