Likes and dislikes with regard to exercise that we develop over time affect our exercise habits as adults, even after graduating from university. As such, university physical education programs have a unique opportunity to address students’ negative perceptions of exercise through improved physical education course offerings that may lead to better exercise habits in adulthood. In this study, we focused on a new sport (gateball) and investigated how the physical education class chosen by the student participants affected their outlook on exercise. In the first questionnaire survey, we collected information on the personal attributes of the students( n = 223) and evaluated whether those who chose a new sport( gateball) for their physical education class disliked exercise more than other sports. In the second survey (n = 42),we used the Profile of Mood States 2 nd Edition (POMS2),the Rating of Perceived Exertion, and the Visual Analog Scale to measure the amount of communication as psychological indices for investigating whether there was any psychological change after having participated in the gateball physical education class, as well as the associated characteristics observed. The results from the first survey revealed that students who chose a new sport disliked exercise more than other sports. The second survey revealed that in POMS2“Vigor-Activity”, there was a significant difference after having participated in the new sport( gateball) for the exercise-loving group only. Furthermore, a significant correlation was found between the amount of communication and psychological improvement in“Vigor-Activity”for both the exercise-loving group and among those who disliked exercise. Specifically, in the gateball class with increased interaction among participants, there was a significant relationship between the amount of communication and the degree of psychological improvement, regardless of whether the student liked or disliked exercise. The details of the class content are examined closely in the Discussion with respect to the survey findings.}, pages = {111--125}, title = {ゲートボール授業実施によるコミュニケーション量と心理的好転の関係:運動の好き嫌いに着目して}, volume = {111}, year = {2022} }
