| 内容記述 | The present paper intends to throw light on the grammatical notion "contrast", by presenting a hypothesis consisting of two parts. (i) An S that has a contrastive element within it must also have a "strut", supporting the contrastive element, which otherwise cannot occur independently. (ii) A pair of a contrastive element and its strut can constitute an S. The combination of these subhypotheses accounts for constraints on the reducibility of a clause, and eventually contributes to weakening somewhat the strenghth of the so-called S-pruning rule. | |||||||
